Punching holes in nylon

If you use a regular leather punch on nylon tack or blanket straps, it will create loose strings that will eventually cause a problem. You need to use heat to seal the edges of the hole.

1) Mark the spot where you want the hole to go with a permanent marker.

2) Heat up the implement with which you will make the hole. You can use a screwdriver, or grip a nail with pliers (the latter option allows for a greater variance in hole diameter because nails come in so many different sizes). Hold the screwdriver or nail over a flame or a stove burner until it is hot.

You can also use a soldering iron. Apparently they can be purchased cheaply at places such as Walmart. Heat according to instructions (usually by plugging them in).

3) Use the implement to sear a hole through the nylon, on the mark you made.

4) If there are any loose ends, use a lighter to melt the stray threads.
