Haltering a horse in the field

I see alot of people that, once they are actually right next to the animal, try to stick the halter straight over the horses nose and wonder why it just lifts it's head and runs off. Silly people! It's so easy! Once you're close enough to scratch the horse, drape the rope over his neck (about halfway down, not right behind the ears that's just asking them to freak and run away) and then catch it underneath. Then, while still holding the rope around the neck, pass the head piece strap under their neck and catch on the top of the neck. You can hang on to this now instead of the rope. Then holding the strap in your right hand and the rest of the halter in your left you can slip the halter over the nose without them being able to lift their head and run away. I put every halter on every horse this way (except for the rope first on well behaved horse who don't need it).

I think people think that a horse must submit to their will and put his own head in the halter or something?? They do learn to drop their nose into the halter this way (I lift the halter up, they poke their nose in)...but they can't get away while they're learning (thereby learning the benefit to them of being hard to catch).
